Sophia is a 21-year-old fashion designer with a vision for her community. After completing StartUp! training in Mombasa, she launched a tie and dye business for women’s clothing and bedsheets. Sophia couldn't afford to take formal tie dye courses so she used the ICT skills she gained at DOT. Sophia taught herself how to make tie and dye through YouTube tutorials and online learning tools. She was able to make her first batch of products which quickly sold out. This was the beginning of Sophie’s Tie and Dye Limited.
Sophia went on to take part in the DOT Kenya Business Competition. Sophie's Tie and Dye Limited won 3rd place which allowed her to buy a sewing machine with the prize money. The prize was a much-needed boost to her business which was steadily growing. Her business earning gave her the finances to enroll in community college to study fashion design.
While her academic and business success grew, Sophia wanted to make an impact. Frustrated with rampant teenage marriage and pregnancies in her community, Sophia decided to step up. Sophia decided to use her skills and experiences to come up with a way to solve this social problem. She began recruiting women and training them in dressmaking and design. They would, in turn, sell their products and make a profit. She even hired a few of the women to work for her. She found that helping these young women gain marketable skills made them self-reliant. She watched as these young women become happy, confident, business women. Sophia found that this reduced their chances of becoming teen brides or mothers.
To date, Sophia has impacted 10 women. She has built partnerships with various organizations to further her mission. She is working to expand her group to accommodate more women.
"When you empower one woman, you empower the whole community’’ - Sophia.
