DOT USA and the Recovery School District team up for a better New Orleans
TeachUp! Intern Training, Summer 2007
For the 2008-2009 school year, DOT USA's TeachUp! Program will expand to cover the Recovery School District in New Orleans, Louisiana. DOT USA is excited to play a part in the expansion and development of education in New Orleans schools as they begin to grow and continue to rebuild. This initiative builds upon DOT's partnership with Cisco through the 21st Century Schools Initiative toward the recovery efforts of impacted schools in the Gulf Coast. "The interest in the internship has been overwhelming," said Yvonne Lehr, Intern Support Manager for the Recovery School District. "A large number of qualified young people have already been accepted as Interns." The Recovery School District (RSD) is a special district that was created by the Louisiana Department of Education in 2003. Legislation called for schools with poor performance rates to be combined forming the RSD which would operate as a state controlled school district under the control of the Louisiana Department of Education.
The goal of the RSD is to take these underdeveloped, underperforming schools in Orleans Parish and create a foundation and an environment to promote higher standards of learning. Following Hurricane Katrina in August 2005, New Orleans was left destroyed and completely devastated. The schools were no exception. In 2005, legislation passed allowing the RSD control over 102 public schools in Orleans Parish.
The RSD hopes to use their unfortunate post-Katrina situation as an opening to change the state of public education in New Orleans. DOT USA is excited to be a part of that change. A grant from the Louisiana Department of Education, approved by the BESE (Board of Elementary and Secondary Education), will bring 20 DOT USA TeachUp! Interns into schools in the Recovery School District. Lehr says that many of the Interns chosen have "stated their satisfaction with the opportunity to 'give back' and be part of the rebuilding of the schools in the Recovery School District."

DOT USA will also support 12 high school students as part of an IT Squad. This group of students will be comprised of juniors and seniors chosen by their qualifications as well as their goals and interests. "Technology is such an integral part of the lives of students that it is of extreme importance that the available technology be put to its best use in the schools," said Lehr. Over the next 10 months, DOT USA will play an active role in preparing and equipping teachers and students with an understanding of technology and its uses in an ever advancing society. DOT USA's commitment to providing increased knowledge of technology, combined with the Recovery School District's goals of providing quality education set to a higher standard, gives the schools in the RSD hope for a brighter future and a stronger foundation on which to build.

Shabakat Al Ordon Celebrates Beneficiaries
A MSE project beneficiary receives a certificate from Mr. Ifram Jameel, General Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Technology and Mr. Rami Al-Karmi, CEO of Shabakat Al Ordon (formerly NetCorps Jordan).
Under the patronage of HE Eng. Bassem Al Rousan, the Minister of Information and Technology, Shabakat Al Ordon graduated their first and second groups of beneficiaries of the Shabakat Tawasol "Capacity Development of Micro & Small Enterprises through ICT" program. The graduation ceremony was held on July 7th in Zarqa Municipality / Al-Sharif Hussein Bin Ali Hall and was attended by representatives from the project partners to celebrate the program's achievements and success. Shabakat Tawasol (which translated means linkages networks) is one of the four main programs implemented by Shabakat Al Ordon, which targets to reach 1600 micro and small enterprises during 2008 in the governorates of Zarqa, Irbid and Al Balqa. The program helps to enable and empower community participants through the provision of practical tools and applications, in addition to a set of technology-based skills allowing them to integrate ICT into their day-to-day operations. The program participants then incubate projects within their business environment aiming to create positive changes by enhancing their business practices in management, marketing, product designs and development, and quality and delivery of services. The Shabakat Tawasol program was implemented this year with the support of UNDP, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Microsoft, and the National Information Center's Knowledge Stations initiative, as the training courses are conducted in twenty-one locations in those Knowledge Stations centers. Dr. Rami Al-Karmi explained during his speech the impact and achievements of the program upon the beneficiaries representing the small and medium enterprises who enrolled in the program across the three governorates. Shabakat Tawasol beneficiaries Ms.Sahar Mansour, a lawyer, and Mr.Ahamd Al Jadayeh described their experiences within the program and the impact the program had on their businesses in terms of efficiency and improved ability to market their products.

Shabakat Al Ordon is a non-profit limited liability company incorporated in Jordan in 2005 aiming to achieve positive impact in the lives of 10 million Arabic beneficiaries by the year 2015. Shabakat Al Ordon drives and implements transformational strategies that improve the economic and social well-being of local communities. By centering its strategies on local youth who are enabled with technical, professional and facilitation skills, they help to empower people, build communities of practice, and incubate initiatives that respond to their community needs through the integration of information and communication technologies in their day-to-day lives. Since 2006, Shabakat Al Ordon has empowered 4,947 beneficiaries by incubating 1,152 life transforming projects through enabling 165 young people, including 93 females, to provide around 40,161 man-days in 146 locations across local communities.
