OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS
Issue #3 - December 2007

Welcome to the third monthly issue of 'Opportunity Knocks', the electronic newsletter of Digital Opportunity Trust (DOT).

DOT provides the world's communities with the tools and resources needed to promote locally driven social and economic development through the use of information and communications technologies (ICT).  Our programs enable youth, women and communities around the world to learn about technology by helping people to relate that to every day life.

In this issue, we enjoy a 'time-out' to look at how DOT staff will be spending their holidays throughout the world, visit NetCorps Jordan's capacity development of micro and small enterprises, introduce DOT USA's Intern Impluse and welcome new members to the DOT family.  We also profile a Featured Intern, Project and Partner in the blue column as part of our ongoing monthly showcase.

We look forward to sharing these stories with you.

Yours truly,
Emily Marks

Home for the Holidays

Seasons Greetings!  Iyi bayramlar!  Siku Kuu Njema!

This holiday season, DOT staff will be enjoying their holiday traditions with family and friends.  Stella Njoroge, Program Manager for DOT Kenya, is looking forward to her favourite holiday: Christmas. "I'll be attending midnight mass on the 24th and singing in the choir in church on Christmas morning.  Later we will have our usual Christmas lunch with the family and then take it easy for the rest of the day."  This year, Kenyans will also be heading to the polls during the holiday season to vote in the presidential, parliamentary and civic elections.  "We will be voting on the 27th and we pray that all goes well."

NetCorps Jordan will be celebrating both Muslim and Christian holidays.  The major Islamic holidays, Eid Al Fitr which follows Ramadan (the month of fasting) and Eid Al Adha, are celebrated by Muslims all over the world.  The foremost highlights of their two holidays are the religious observances and the feasting, which encourage people to come together and share both their lives and their food.  Christmas will be celebrated through the exchanging of gifts, family gatherings, church services, bazaars, choirs, sing-alongs, and traditional Christmas trees and decorations.

The DOT USA team will be spending the Christmas holiday season with their families. Traditionally, families prepare a festive dinner complete with turkey, ham, dressing and all the fixings!

No matter where we are or how we will be celebrating the holidays, it is a comfort to know that we can all stay connected this holiday season.

From the entire DOT Team, we wish you peace and happiness this holiday season.

Welcome New DOT Members

DOT would like to welcome Gillian Brewin as the new Program Advisor for DOT Ethiopia.  Gillian is a dedicated and resourceful development programmer who has worked, traveled and lived in Africa and Asia over the last 30 years. In the last five years, Gillian has worked with USAID/Ethioipa's humanitarian and management services offices. Prior to joining USAID, Gillian worked for Canada's Program Support Unit (now ECCO) serving CIDA's Horn of Africa program.

DOT would also like to welcome Mr. Rami Al-Karmi as NetCorps Jordan's new Chief Executive Officer.  Rami previously held the position of Program Manager since the inception of the organization.  His impressive educational background, work experience, numerous involvements and affiliations, and specifically his entrepreneurial spirit convinced the Board of Directors of his eligibility to lead the organization as it transitions into its next era.

Congratulations Gillian and Rami, and all the best in your endeavors!
