OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS
Issue #1 - October 2007
"Special Graduation Issue"
Welcome to the first monthly issue of 'Opportunity Knocks', the electronic newsletter of Digital Opportunity Trust (DOT).

DOT provides the world's communities with the tools and resources needed to promote locally driven social and economic development through the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs).  Our programs enable youth, women and communities around the world to learn about technology by helping people to relate that to every day life.

Each month, our e-newsletter will share program success stories, spotlight an Intern who has made a significant contribution, feature one of our Partners and show you how to get more involved with DOT. We hope that you will enjoy learning more about our programs, the impact that has been made on communities and individuals, and the Interns who have touched their lives.
We look forward to sharing these stories with you.  If you would like to learn more about us, please visit our new website.
Yours truly,
Emily Marks

NetCorps Jordan's Graduation Ceremony and Showcase Exhibition

Dr. Khaled Toukan, the Minister of Education

NetCorps Jordan (NCJ) graduated their second group of youth Interns who participated in the "Support to the Jordan Education Initiative (JEI)" project.  The graduation ceremony and showcase exhibition were held on September 5th and were attended by the Secretary General for Administrative and Financial Affairs, Dr. Ahmad Battah and partner representatives.

Mr. Azzam Shweihat, the Vice Chairman of NCJ's Board of Directors, delivered the opening speech followed by a brief presentation about NCJ and the "Support to the JEI" project. Under this project, the graduating team of youth Interns were responsible for providing technical support to the teachers and lab technicians within the Ministry of Education's Discovery Schools in the Greater Amman area. The Interns also worked to raise awareness on the benefits of using information technology tools and applications to enhance learning environments.

Launched by DOT in 2002, NCJ's national program focuses on two areas: 'Promoting Entrepreneurship through ICT' and 'ICT in Education'.  The JEI project was developed under the leadership of King Abdullah II of Jordan to encourage the delivery and development of education in Jordan  in partnership with the World Economic Forum.  Cisco Systems was a lead sponsor of the initiative.

The JEI project was launched with NCJ in October 2005 with financial support from the USAID funded ERfKE Support Project.  Since its inception, around 45 Interns have been recruited and trained to serve 100 Discovery Schools where they completed 12 site surveys and positively impacted approximately 2,460 teachers and lab technicians. The project is also financially supported by UNIFEM.

A TeachUp! Intern Graduate Success Story

Lynn NahmensAfter Lynn Nahmens graduated from college in 2005, she was like many of her peers, unsure about what her next step would be. With a bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts from the Louisiana Scholar's College at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, La., she held a number of jobs working in education and retail.

But it was after her participation as a TeachUp! Intern with Digital Opportunity Trust , that Nahmens realized what career path she wanted to follow - teaching.

Achieving innovation takes leadership, investment and the passion to see it all through. DOT and Cisco have partnered in the Middle East, Africa and most recently in the United States through the 21st Century Schools (21S) Initiative,  which provides a leading commitment to the recovery efforts of impacted schools in the Gulf Coast.  TeachUp! empowers teachers to harness the power of technology to fully engage students, to expand the boundaries of the classroom, and to prepare the new generation of connected global citizens.
