Moses Opondo

My name is Moses Opondo. I am a graduate in Education with a bias in Economics and Business Studies. My interests include but are not limited to travelling, working with young people, playing soccer and music, especially playing the guitar and keyboard.

I joined DOT Kenya as ReachUp! Intern in October 2006 after successfully completing my undergraduate studies. Despite my academic credentials, I was not very confident and had not discovered most of my strengths and skills. I also lacked experience.

As an intern, I discovered my hidden talents in leadership and honed my skills in writing and oratory and got the much needed exposure to the workplace. Besides this I got a challenge to give back to the community by empowering young people. I improved my communication, facilitation and networking abilities.

The programme also gave me direction on how to achieve my dream of being involved in human development. After six months of internship with DOT Kenya, I secured a job with a micro-finance institution (MFI) as a Development Finance Officer where I applied the skills gained during my internship and was able to meet all my targets comfortably. Advocacy was part of the Intern Training and a large part of our work as interns and I was able to transfer these skills to my new position in the MFI. It helped me to market and sell the company’s products and in comparison with my other colleagues, this was a task I could perform with ease. I also found it easy to get along with everyone regardless of their backgrounds, a testament to the team building skills I received from my time with DOT.

When DOT Kenya advertised for a vacancy for an Intern Support Manager I did not hesitate to apply for this new and challenging role. Having worked with DOT before and experiencing firsthand the positive impact of the programme on the community I wanted to be part of the team that was making this happen.

I am happy with my current role and I’m looking forward to contributing to growing the DOT programme in Kenya to even greater heights.
