DOT China brings a new continent – Asia – into DOT’s network of global programs.

Since its inception in the fall of 2008, the DOT China program has welcomed two ICT for Development initiatives:

DOT China Education Initiative

In 2006, DOT and Cisco brought the TeachUp! program to those school districts in Mississippi and Louisiana devastated by Hurricane Katrina.  The TeachUp! program is an integral component of Cisco’s 21st Century Schools initiative and has been designed to help schools and communities effectively use new technology to support learning and to achieve improved learning outcomes.

Sharing lessons learned and building on the early impact and success of the TeachUp! program in the USA, the DOT China  education initiative engages young university students and recent graduates to serve as TeachUp! Interns in schools in Sichuan Province. These highly trained young men and women work one-to-one with teachers to integrate technology into learning. Together, Interns and teachers create simple and powerful projects that are applicable in the classroom and the greater local community.  DOT China and DOT USA form a Community of Practice where Interns, teachers and students can share their experiences and perspectives and learn from one another.

Schools are strategically selected by DOT and the partners in the initiative.  The collaborative process reflects China’s ICT and educational national strategies, addresses post-earthquake reconstruction priorities, considers Cisco’s Public-Private Partnership Board and other stakeholder recommendations.

IBM Corporate Service Corps Program

Based on a very positive and successful relationship with IBM in the planning of  a new, innovative employee leadership program in Turkey, the Corporate Service Corps (CSC), IBM has now designated DOT as a Global Implementation Partner for its international CSC program.  As part of this expansion, in 2009 DOT will implement the CSC program in China's Sichuan Province which will see teams of IBM Leaders helping organizations in the province apply advanced ICT solutions to the reconstruction and economic development priorities.

CSC is a leadership development program in which IBM high performers from diverse backgrounds are selected to experience the cultural and business environments in high priority developing markets, such as China and Turkey. During a 4-week assignment these IBM leaders volunteer their services to assist local organizations establish innovative ICT strategies and solve complex challenges. Participants are selected from throughout the IBM world and are mobilized in groups of 9 who will live and work together during their deployment. In Sichuan, IBM dispatched a total of 3 groups in 2009 during the months of May, August and October.  Each of these groups completed their 4-week assignments in Chengdu.
