Name of Technology Used: MS PowerPoint
Name of Intern: Angel Brown
School Name and Location: Mary Bethune Alternative School, Hattiesburg, Mississippi
Describe the Success Story:
Mary Bethune Alternative School in Hattiesburg, Mississippi décor is of a family environment. Since the school is smaller than the rest of the schools in the district the faculty and staff are closely interwoven. This success story entails of some of the high school teachers collaborating together on having the students do PowerPoint presentations for Black History Month. The students were to divide into groups and present amazing African-Americans who are/were trailblazers for present African-Americans. In order for this goal to be accomplished, the students had to learn the basic skills of doing PowerPoint.
The teachers would setup time to bring the students in the computer lab to work on their presentations and to learn the basic skills.
How did this activity/project benefit the teachers, students and the school?
In the process of the students' learning, one of the high school teachers also learned that music could be implemented into the presentations. This news was so exciting to the teacher that he added music to every group’s presentation. As the presentations were being finished I sent out emails to district faculty to attend the program and also posted the information on the Global NetCorps Website in the events calendar for other interns and Digital Opportunity Trust staff to come join in.
What (skills, knowledge or attitude) did you as an Intern learn from this experience?
The students working as a team was an accomplishment that worked well in doing this project. The areas of improvement for this project could have been giving the students tutorials of how to do PowerPoint instead just doing hands-on learning. The students would have had both aspects to go by.
