Interns
ReachUp! harnesses the energy and dynamism of youth as a way to actively engage communities and promote change. DOT recruits and trains talented young people from local communities to become ICT leaders, or Interns.
ReachUp! Interns are young, tech savvy university and college graduates, ages 21-29, drawn from a wide range of disciplines from marketing to computer science and united by a common passion for community development through the application of ICTs.
Interns are trained in 21st century ICT, business and management skills. Using a peer-to-peer approach, the Interns then facilitate the delivery of digital inclusion training programs to community participants. The participants then apply their new ICT and entrepreneurial knowledge and skills by developing projects that make technology work for them.
Here's what a ReachUp! Intern in Kenya has to say:
"I am making a difference in the lives of the beneficiaries I am teaching. They have gained knowledge about conducting research and how to use the computer. I was really moved by one of my students. His name is Muli and he used to be a street kid. He is now reformed. As part of the ReachUp! program, the beneficiaries are asked to identify a project. Using the skills he gained, Muli has written a project that he hopes will be funded. He would like to start up a computer place where he and other reformed street kids can pass on their computer knowledge to other street kids."
