Make simple things complicated

The goal of TEACHUP program is to simplify the teachers’ task, enrich their class and improve their teaching skills through utilization of modern information technology. To some people, this sounds like making simple things complicated and we have to do that.

The things need to be complicated before simplifying them. Such as go out. We have to walk on foot and walk a couple of dozen feet one hundred meters when science is so underdeveloped. And now we can go out by car. Stepping on the gas, we could reach anywhere we like without any effort. It is easier for us to go out. However, behind the simple process, there are so many steps we must go through before we get so convenient transport, for instance, research the materials, learn the principle of machinery, develop the engine, design the tire; also we have to learn how to drive.

In the same way, during the process of bringing technology to teachers, we have to spend more time to help teachers change the traditional teaching methods. Of course, advanced teaching equipment and concept can make teaching easier, but the teachers should start from the complicated step, then learn it and at last master it. Learning new things is a complicated process, such as learning every detail of tool bar of Activstudio. This is what we are now doing.

Please give some applause to our teachers’ assistants who are doing the most boring and complicated work which need repeat the easy principle in detail again and again. In spite of this , we are getting down to our work consistently and enjoy it, because we know that only did we make the simple operation “complicated”, the teachers can master easily. And we make our education in a big step.

We DOT have always been making progress.

DON'T Teach Fish to Swim

When you meet experts, respect them and the attitude will reward you.

Our main job is to increase the teachers’ ICT skills. However, the teachers of Computer and Science Department are all very good at ICT skills, which is a problem to overcome. At the beginning, I have no idea how to deal with it for their ICT knowledge is even better than most of ours.

Therefore, I began to observe their classes to get some idea of their way of teaching, and I communicated with the teachers to understand their mentality. After a while, I found a phenomenon that the teachers would always show the students how they designed their own PPT or other files, instead of merely showing the contents. Therefore, I decided to change my way of persuading them to join us.

I told them, “because the time was limited for us, so when we finish this program we will leave, other teachers will ask for help from you-teachers from Computer and Science Department teachers. Even though it is sometimes of much trouble, you can help teachers from other department to make it go smoothly.” Then the teachers felt proud of themselves, and accepted my proposal of begging training.

The teacher handled the operations quickly. I also deliberately compared the functions of PPT and Promethean ActivStudio. Before long, some teachers started using ActivStudio sometimes, instead of PPT all the time.

Therefore, we need to reassess the position of the teachers whose ICT skills are excellent. We should first get some idea of what we can give them trough the training, and respect their identity through giving them honor and then create a desire for them to show their merits in technology. Then we can teach them successfully.
