DON'T Teach Fish to Swim

When you meet experts, respect them and the attitude will reward you.

Our main job is to increase the teachers’ ICT skills. However, the teachers of Computer and Science Department are all very good at ICT skills, which is a problem to overcome. At the beginning, I have no idea how to deal with it for their ICT knowledge is even better than most of ours.

Therefore, I began to observe their classes to get some idea of their way of teaching, and I communicated with the teachers to understand their mentality. After a while, I found a phenomenon that the teachers would always show the students how they designed their own PPT or other files, instead of merely showing the contents. Therefore, I decided to change my way of persuading them to join us.

I told them, “because the time was limited for us, so when we finish this program we will leave, other teachers will ask for help from you-teachers from Computer and Science Department teachers. Even though it is sometimes of much trouble, you can help teachers from other department to make it go smoothly.” Then the teachers felt proud of themselves, and accepted my proposal of begging training.

The teacher handled the operations quickly. I also deliberately compared the functions of PPT and Promethean ActivStudio. Before long, some teachers started using ActivStudio sometimes, instead of PPT all the time.

Therefore, we need to reassess the position of the teachers whose ICT skills are excellent. We should first get some idea of what we can give them trough the training, and respect their identity through giving them honor and then create a desire for them to show their merits in technology. Then we can teach them successfully.

Real Marketing

I guess you have a talent for marketing too, and you have done it so creatively. You managed to play with the computer teachers' pride to the advantage of the program. Your thinking can enable the program to be sustainable even after the exit of Teach Up, that ensures a lasting legacy.
Keep up the good work.

Appreciate the open mind

Thanks Hnyandiko. You know what? Acturely, I did not have enough confidence on communication before I took up in Teach Up. I really appreciate what I have been taught in DOT. Through this project, I get an open mind and good skills on dealing with diffrent communication situations. I will do my best to help the teachers that also help myself.

I think the most important reason why teachers do not willing to use Activstudio to create their own courseware is the time consuming. There are two reasons I think:
1. Teachers are not fimiliar in using Activstudio;
2. Teachers have to go on internet search for resources as the resources library is limited.
From your situation, teachers ICT skills are excellent, so there is no technical problem. Help teachers to search effectively through internet, and be fimilar with create their own resource library and keep updating may help them shorten the time of preparing courseware.

Thank you for your suggestion

Thank you Leo, I agree with you that why teachers don't want to use Activesudio Sofeware to make coursewares and I think your suggestion on how to shorten the time for teachers is very useful. I will try it. Thank you again.

Kenya and China fish swim in same water

Hi Tracie- I see that you and Henry, a DOT Intern from Kenya, have exchanged blogs. Maybe you also read Henry's blog on the DOT Home page, where he talks about a problem in his community and how he solved it. Like Henry, you used skills of observation and active listening to identify ways to bring your teachers into the problem solving process. Both you and Henry- from opposite sides of the world - have built sustainability into your programs by transferring your knowledge and making the other people feel proud of their accomplishments. Well done!
