spare the rod reason with the children

by Alex Makokha last modified 2008-08-11 08:32
Due to the recent spate of school unrest many people have gone to the knee jack mode and corporal punishment is gaining momentum each day ,the old fork are out with there in our days stories………. .But is this the way to do in this time and age ,I would beg to disagree with the following reasons.
Fighting violence with violence, this is the irony of the situation in our pursuit to end violence we want to use the same vice, do we really want to instill in our youth that the only way to gain discipline is to use valence, than how are we supposed to solve our other social vices like spouse abuse or will we have a magic wand to automatically recondition them at the end of the school period.
Logic v/s fear, at the teen age is the time when children learn to use logic, reasoning, do we really want to substitute this crucial process with fear, to meet our short term goals. so what happens when the fear element is removed in short what I am asking is would you want some one who does right for rights sake or due to fear .you should go to the university to see what happens when this individuals encounter freedom with no supervision.
Hero v/s pain, this is the chooses which most students face ,would you accept momentary pain to become a hero in the face of the other students .in my school days many students choose the hero option most of the time. So how are we supposed to solve this dilemma? Standardization and conditioning , who is doing to set the standard ,how many stokes will act as a deterrent against ,drug abuse , sex , etc since each individual has different pain thresh hold how sure that five strokes for Tom will deter John . then the little psychology I learn in school that after some time people become conditioned to a stimuli and this necessitates the increase of the stimuli so how far will the teacher be allowed go. And what will happen the next time a student is seriously hurt.
I am not in any way trying to justify the student’s actions but this situation is too serious for us to be short sighted and take the easy way out.
