Digital Opportunity Trust has signed a landmark agreement with the Ministry of Education of Mexico to support innovation in the Mexican school system.
(Philadelphia, PA/Ottawa, ON) June 27, 2011 - Digital Opportunity Trust (DOT) and the Ministry of Education of Mexico (SEB) have signed a major agreement to integrate DOT's TeachUp! program into the teacher training strategy that is driving Mexico's national movement to bring technology and innovation to its education system.
The agreement was signed by Janet Longmore, President and CEO, and Maestro Fernando Gonzalez Sanchez, Subsecretary of Basic Education, on the occasion of the International Society for Technology in Education Conference in Philadelphia (ISTE 2011). The signing was attended by Ministers of Education from the states of Aguascalientes, Tabasco and Colima as well as officials from the states of Nuevo León, Puebla and the coordinator of the national Quality Schools program.
"Progress in science and technology is fundamental to economic and social development - and Mexico will not be left behind" said Subsecretary Sanchez. "SEB is making huge investments in technology for its schools through its national HDT program (Digital Literacy for All). We have seen DOT in action in Puebla, Aguascalientes and Veracruz and we want to extend this partnership throughout Mexico."
DOT's TeachUp! program will introduce the use of 21st century technology to thousands of teachers, schools and classrooms. DOT Mexico will train graduating teachers to become leaders of change in their schools as they guide their colleagues in the application of modern classroom technologies and the introduction of new learning methods. Coaches, mentors, trainers, and teachers - this generation will be an important force in bringing innovation into Mexican schools.
"We are delighted that our commitment to Mexico and our ground-breaking work in the initial three states has been so successful. DOT is honored to be a partner with the Ministry and a contributor to Mexico's innovation in education programming. I can assure Subsecretary Sanchez that DOT will apply its global expertise to the benefit of the young people in Mexico," stated Longmore, the founder of DOT.
DOT has been working in Mexico in partnership with Cisco and state governments since 2009. DOT and Cisco have introduced modern technology and teaching methods to 40 schools, nearly 2,000 teachers and over 38,000 students in the states of Puebla, Aguascalientes and Veracruz. DOT has established a local subsidiary, DOT Mexico, which is staffed by Mexican education experts.
DOT developed its TeachUp! program with the support of Cisco as part of its 21st Century Schools commitment to the states of Mississippi and Louisiana following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. DOT USA is supporting innovation in schools throughout the states and has led DOT's education sector expansion in China and Mexico.
