Counting my Blessings as a DOT Intern

DOT Kenya Intern Winnie Wangulu facilitates the ReachUp! program in Bungoma County, Kenya. Here, she talks about how she has seen the program affect both her participants and herself.

Through my experience facilitating the ReachUp! program at DOT, I have seen my participants lives change for the better. This has always given me satisfaction, and makes me feel like I should never stop! The ReachUp! program has been a chance for many of my participants to literally meet a computer for the first time. For others, it's an opportunity to explore new tasks that can be performed on the computer. My participants are coming out to discover their gifts and talents, and are perfecting them.

Coaching has been my favourite of my roles as an Intern. One of my participants, Zakayo Orengo, inspires me every time I meet him. A humble high school finalist, he taught himself how to build a website all on his own. He has never undergone studies beyond high school! Zakayo found tutorials on the Internet and learnt computer languages by himself. He's also a good artist and painter, and does video recording and editing at his local church. Though Zakayo can't further his studies because of finanical constraints, his spirit for a brighter future amazes me and I am certain his ability to learn and energy to create will bring him very far.

Besides allowing me to help young people in Kenya grow their talents, being a DOT Intern has also given me the chance to grow my own abilities. Thanks to DOT, I have had the chance to participate in various community projects through organizations such as the Bungoma Youth Professional Association, the Dominion Training Institute, and others. The DOT Innovation Festival was a great opportunity for me to pitch a project I have thought about for years, and I managed to come in third place in the "Grow Your Ideas" category. I hope this will inspire me to see the implementation of this proposal and make it a reality, so we can reach a better world economy and a sustainable livelihood for dairy farmers.

This is just the beginning for me, and I am still counting my blessings.

I echo this testimony Winnie. While going through i was just imagining the positive impact DOT has done in your life. And that your participant, you should do something like start coaching him. He is going to go places. Keep up  thr good work Winnie and from the Innovation Festival I myself honor you!

Thanks Winnie for  sharing such an inspiring story. Success is the little things we do to others to help them succeed. DOT has given us the opportunity to do this and may we live to utilize it to the maxmum. I wish you success in your project and that man, that Orengo - He's meant to go far in life, say this to him on my behalf, he don't have an option but to succeed in life, he has the potential. Let him drem big and go right ahead to accomplish his dreams. Am inspired by both of you. Kudos.
