JANET LONGMORE - President & CEO
Janet Longmore is the founder of DOT. A determined leader and inspiring role model, she has dedicated her career to the creation of new approaches and sustainable solutions that have successfully helped people in less fortunate societies improve their lives. She has earned an international reputation as an innovative social entrepreneur. Under her leadership and vision, DOT has risen to the forefront of social enterprise, an international leader and innovator in enabling people to access and apply information and communications technologies to create education, economic and entrepreneurial opportunities. In 2010 Janet Longmore was recognized as one of Canada's Top 100 Women of Influence by the Women's Executive Network; the CATA CanWIT Woman in Technology Entrepreneur of the Year for 2011 and a TIAW World of Difference 100 Award winner in 2011.
JANE JAMIESON - Vice President
Jane is a dynamic executive, with extensive experience in international development, project management, business development in emerging markets and public-private partnerships in over 20 countries. Based in Istanbul since 2005, Jane is a former Canadian diplomat and holds an M.A. in International Affairs from the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs in Ottawa, Canada.
GRANT THOMAS - Vice President, Strategic Development
Grant is an experienced management professional with extensive international development experience in many regions of the world. He is a specialist in partnership and joint venture development and has been responsible for millions of dollars of private and public sector investment in developing and transitional economies. He is a former executive in several IT companies, a partner in PriceWaterhouse and he co-led the Acacia Initiative in Africa for Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC). He has been a member of the board of directors of Precarn Incorporated, the Institute for Robotics and Intelligent Systems, Willis College and TeKnoWave Inc.
NURIA ARIAS - Regional Executive, Americas
Nuria holds an undergraduate degree in Education, Masters in Counseling and International Education. Her professional experience has brought her to work in the areas of education and development in the United States and LatinAmerica. Nuria has had the opportunity to work with international education entities in El Salvador and the Dominican Republic.
Operations
TONY VETTER - Senior Director, Operations
Tony brings extensive professional operations and project management experience and a commitment to innovation within DOT's vision. Prior to joining DOT, Tony was a project manager with the Global Connectivity program at the International Institute for Sustainable Development. In 2007, Tony completed a master's degree in international development at the Norman Patterson School of International Affairs (Ottawa, Canada). Tony has also enjoyed over 10 years in the telecommunications sector, having worked in senior product management, technical marketing, and executive advisory roles.
KATHY DURAND - Manager, Global Results
Kathy comes to DOT with fifteen years of experience in international development and brings with her a commitment to participatory approaches and gender equality and enthusiasm for using monitoring and evaluation as a way to not only recognize achievements, but also improve future programming by integrating lessons learned into planning. She has worked as an advisor on external project evaluations, developed monitoring approaches within national systems and established project monitoring processes. Kathy also brings experience managing projects in Ghana, Nigeria and Swaziland, in a number of sectors including education, local governance, capacity development and water and sanitation, as well as experience providing policy and program analysis within the multilateral system, particularly the regional development banks.
Technology
GERARD VAN DER BURG - Director, Technology and Social Media
Gerard has worked in the International Development Sector for the past 25 years. His work has taken him to live and work in many countries in The Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia. Gerard provides guidance and leadership to organizations in the design and implementation of collaboration, Information Communications Technology (ICT), and Knowledge Management (KM) systems, using Social Media tools and methodologies. Gerard serves as the Director of Technology and Social media at Digital Opportunity Trust (DOT).
Finance
ERLINDA SACULLES - Finance Director
A CPA from the Philippines with over 20 years of Bookkeeping and Accounting experience, with a Masters Degree in Business Management from the University of the Philippines, Erlinda has been the Finance Officer with DOT since 2006. She brings numerous experience in different areas of Accounting from both the private and non-profit sectors.
Fundraising
ELIZABETH HOLLAND - Development and Grant Coordinator
As DOT's Development and Grant Coordinator, Elizabeth engages in research, proposal and partnership development to support DOT's program operations and growth strategy. Elizabeth has a background in fundraising and community work in Canada and abroad, as well as an MA in International Political Economy from the University of Kent.
Communications
ANNE PATTERSON - Community Manager
As DOT's Community Manager, Anne works with global teams to support new media implementation, coordinate communications, write and produce web content, manage DOT's internal community of thousands of Interns and alumnus, and organize DOT's series of annual virtual festivals. Anne has an undergraduate degree in Anthropology, and comes to DOT with a background in program management, communications, and new media.
HEATHER MARSHALL - Executive Assistant
Heather has been the Executive Assistant at the DOT office in Ottawa since 2008. As well as providing excellent administrative support to the Executive Office and Country Teams, Heather has a role on the DOT global communications team and helps to manage the content of DOT's country websites.
Learning
EMMA J. STODEL, PhD – Learning Director
Emma has been with DOT since 2010 and is leading the curriculum development for DOT's economic development programs. Leading a growing learning team, Emma facilitates the development of competencies in DOT staff, Interns, and community participants through blended learning experiences. Emma has a background in educational psychology and her passions include eLearning and enhancing human performance. With a graduate degree in sport psychology, Emma applies performance excellence principles in her curriculum development to create engaging learning that develops skills that can be applied across all facets of life. Emma is the Principal and Founder of Learning 4 Excellence.
NDEKEZI MAARIFA – Acting Regional Learning Coordinator
Ndekezi Maarifa is an experiential learning facilitator who is passionate about outdoor pursuits. His interests involve moving experiential learning from the outdoors to the classroom and applying it to different learning areas such as ICT and Entrepreneurship. Ndekezi has worked with DOT since 2010 and is currently the Acting Regional Learning Coordinator. In this position, he oversees the implementation of the learning experiences and works with the Global Learning Team on curriculum development. Ndekezi began his career as a leadership instructor with Outward Bound Kenya, then as a Lead Instructor for Cadet Leadership Development and National Youth Leadership Challenge courses. From here, he developed further interest and capacity in corporate team building and coaching. He is the Founding Director of Frontiers Adventures Great Lakes Ltd, an experiential education organization in Rwanda.
KATE HAYWARD - Curriculum Developer and Instructional Design Expert
Kate Hayward is a Senior Instructional Designer who started working with the DOT Global Learning Team in 2004. She brings over 30 years writing and editing experience, 15 of which were spent designing curriculum for face-to-face and technology-enabled settings on subjects ranging from Computer Aided Design and Engineering to Life Skills. Kate has used her talents in a variety of markets, from energy exploration to publishing to financial services to non-profits. Kate has a passion for facilitating the emergence of ideas. She has an undergraduate degree in Journalism and Geology and an MBA from the University of Texas.
Research
TERRIE LYNN THOMPSON - Researcher-in-Residence
Terrie Lynn was DOT's first Learning Director and led the creation of learning programs for Interns and community members (Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt) as well as development of the online learning elements for TeachUp! in the USA and ReachUp! in Kenya and Ethiopia. Terrie Lynn's background includes management, development of organizational (e)learning strategies, instruction, and curriculum design in a range of settings. Completing her PhD at the University of Alberta, Faculty of Education, Terrie Lynn is researching how self-employed workers use web-based technologies for work-related learning in online communities and Web2.0 enabled spaces.
